Your age

Your age is an important factor in acquiring the minimum of 75 points. Applicants 29 years of age or under will receive 20 points. Applicants for the HSMP that are 30 to 34 will receive 10 points. Applicants for the HSMP visa 35 to 39 will receive 5 points. People applying for HSMP over 40 years of age will receive no points. To assist with a Highly Skilled Migrant Program - HSMP approval your age does clearly matter. The reason for such blatant age discrimination under the UK HSMP scheme is that the UK has an aging population and requires younger workers to join the talent pool available to industry within the UK. As the UK population gets older there are is a greater drain on the public purse and the UK’s free health service. To combine this with the reduced number of young people entering the work place the UK shall require overseas skills and expertise from overseas to join the work force for some time to come. HSMP visas are the perfect way to attract young people with excellent skills and experience to work in the UK. It is deemed that the most productive HSMP applicants are those who intend to start their own business within the UK and possibly employ UK or European nationals in the medium to long term. The majority of small businesses started each year in the UK are by people under the age of 30. This is reflected in the points system under the HSMP scheme. Any cases received by the Government after a birthday that puts you in the next category will be assessed according to the older age group and points awarded accordingly. It is also noted by the government in how they structured the HSMP visa that it is more difficult for a young graduate to receive the same level of income as that often paid to an older individual with more practical experience with their chosen profession. Even though a younger person may have the same level of skills as their older counterpart they are often paid less due to their age and lack of practical experience. It is also recognised that the potential for the younger person to develop faster with their career is greater. While a person is economically active under the HSMP visa within the UK they will be paying taxes either as an employee or via a Limited Company. Once a person obtains indefinite leave to remain it is probable they will continue to reside in the UK eventually making it their domicile. HSMP visas do eventually lead to Citizenship. This mean a younger person working in the UK will contribute more to the UK tax system prior to retirement. The UK Government therefore place a value not only on how effective a person will be within their profession but also the long term contribution the HSMP applicant will make towards the UK economy and Her Majesties Revenue and Customs.
